چکیده

We present a method of selecting quasars up to redshift ?6 with random forests, supervised machine-learning method, applied Pan-STARRS1 and WISE data. find that, thanks the increasing set known quasars, we can assemble training that enables algorithms become competitive alternative other methods this redshift. candidate for range 4.8–6.3, which includes region around z = 5.5 where is difficult due their photometric similarity red brown dwarfs. demonstrate under our survey restrictions, reach high completeness (66% ± 7% below 5.6/ above 5.6) while maintaining selection efficiency (/). Our estimated via novel based on different distributions contaminants sky. The final catalog 515 candidates 225 quasars. predict contain additional new 5.6 above, make publicly available. Spectroscopic follow-up observations 37 led us discover 20 (18 at 4.6 ? 5.5, 2 ? 5.7). These are consistent predictions efficiency. argue forests lead higher because contains number objects would be rejected by common color cuts, including one newly discovered 5.7

High - redshift obscured quasars

Using mid-infrared and radio criteria, we select a sample of candidate z ∼ 2 obscured quasars. Optical spectroscopy confirms about half of these as type-2 quasars, and modelling the population suggests 50-80% of the quasars are obscured. We find some flat radio spectrum type-2 quasars, and tentative evidence for obscuration unrelated to the torus. Using a similar sample, we also find evidence f...

High-Redshift Quasars as Probes of Galaxy and Cluster Formation

Quasars at large redshifts provide a powerful probe of structure formation in the early universe. Several arguments suggest that the formation of ellipticals and massive bulges may have involved an early quasar phase. At very large redshifts, such structures are likely to be found at the highest peaks of the density field, and would thus be highly biased tracers: the earliest (massive) galaxy f...

High-Redshift, Radio-Loud Quasars

I discuss two programs to study radio-loud quasars at high (z ∼ > 4) redshift. Quasars are the most luminous, non-transient objects known and are observed to the earliest cosmic epochs. At lower redshifts, radio-loud quasars are associated with host galaxies having de Vaucoleurs profiles. By association, identifying and studying a sample of high-redshift, radio-loud quasars provides important c...

High Redshift Quasars , Emission Lines and ‘ Cloudy ’

I describe some of the outstanding “big picture” questions in quasar research and how the development of the plasma simulation code Cloudy is being guided to answer them. QSO spectra are complex and challenge even the most sophisticated spectral codes. Particular emphasis is given to a central question – how do the properties of the central black hole and the accretion disk are manifested in th...

High Redshift Quasars and Star Formation History

Quasars are among the most luminous objects in the universe , and they can be studied in detail up to the highest known redshift. Assuming that the gas associated with quasars is closely related to the interstellar medium of the host galaxy, quasars can be used as tracer of the star formation history in the early universe. We have observed a small sample of quasars at redshifts 3 ∼ < z ∼ < 5 an...
